Code of Conduct

Angel with halo

As members of East Bay Harmony, we commit to building a welcoming, respectful, and musically collaborative environment for all. Our shared success depends not just on our voices, but on our attitudes, actions, and mutual support. Members of East Bay Harmony are expected to abide by the following:

1. Respect for All

  • Treat members, director, accompanist, and guests with kindness, courtesy, and respect.
  • Value the diverse experiences, identities, and backgrounds within our chorus.
  • Inappropriate, disrespectful, or offensive comments, whether about someone’s appearance, identity, ability, or any other personal matter, have no place in our community.
  • Jokes or remarks that make others feel uncomfortable or unsafe are unacceptable, regardless of intent.
  • Sexual harassment in any form (verbal, non-verbal, or physical) will not be tolerated.
  • Speak to others as you would like to be spoken to, especially in moments of disagreement or frustration.
  • Listen openly when others express concern about your behavior, reflect on how your words or actions may have affected those around you, and respond in a constructive manner.

2. Musical Integrity

  • Strive to sing in a way that blends and supports the ensemble sound.
  • Follow the musical and logistical guidance of the director.
  • Be prompt, prepared, and attentive in rehearsals and performances.
  • Memorize music by stated deadlines (unless granted an exemption by the director).

3. Positive Participation

  • Contribute to the chorus community with encouragement, enthusiasm, and cooperation.
  • Practice good rehearsal etiquette: arrive on time, minimize distractions, and be ready to sing.
  • Keep side conversations during rehearsals music-related and quiet.
  • Support fellow singers in their growth, celebrating effort and improvement.
  • Be kind and encouraging when giving individual musical feedback.
  • Please bring any concerns about others to the attention of the director.

4. Addressing Concerns as a Chorus Member

  • Interpersonal concerns between chorus members: We encourage members to first address issues kindly and directly with the individual(s) involved, when appropriate and safe to do so. If the issue cannot be resolved through direct conversation, or if a member feels uncomfortable addressing it alone, they are encouraged to bring the concern to any member of the Board. The Board is available to support members in finding a fair and thoughtful resolution.
  • Musical concerns about chorus members: While kind and constructive feedback on specific musical issues can be helpful, major musical concerns should be brought to the attention of the director.

5. Board Response

  • Behaviors that undermine the community spirit of the chorus, as listed above, will be addressed as follows:
    • When concerns arise, they will be met first with direct and respectful communication from the director or board.
    • Opportunities to reflect, receive feedback, and improve will be offered. In cases where improvement is not demonstrated, further action may be taken in the interest of the chorus as a whole.
    • Continued or seriously unacceptable behavior may lead to further steps, including the possibility of being asked to leave the chorus, in order to protect the well-being of the group.

We come together to create something beautiful, not only in sound, but in community.
By committing to this code, we make our chorus a space where all voices are welcomed, valued, and safe.
